Zambia is located in Southern Africa, neighbor to the Democratic Republic of Congo to the north, Malawi to the east, Angola to the west and Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south. I will never forget the peace of mind that Zambia afforded me; I felt liberated from all cares of the world. It's a place where reality converts to a motionless existence while allowing breathtaking moments to ease the mind with enchanting impulses. I truly enjoyed visiting Victoria Falls. Standing next to Victoria Falls and allowing its powerful flow to embrace my skin with its gentle mist, was a sensation that allowed me to capture lasting memories and thoughts of returning to this remarkable country.
The locals refer to Victoria Falls, as the"Mosi-oa-Tunya", which when translated means, "The Smoke Which Thunder". It is not the highest waterfall, but Victoria Falls is revered as the single largest curtain of falling water in the world, with up to 500 million liters per minute. Sprays from this giant waterfall can be seen from a distance of 30 km from the Lusaka road in Zambia and 50 km from Bulawayo road, Zimbabwe. With a combined width of 5, 604 ft and a height of 354 ft, Victoria Falls is said to be twice the height of North America's Niagara Falls and easily, over twice the width of Horseshoe Falls which feeds into the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.
Victoria Falls is a significant portion of the Zambezi River which is the fourth largest river in Africa, spreading over 1,600 miles leading into the sea. The Zambezi River passes through Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and parts of Mozambique. Historical records confirm that Victoria Falls received its name from a Scottish missionary and explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who was visiting Zambia at the time and named it in honor of Queen Victoria of England. It is also believed that Dr. Livingstone was the first European to view Victoria Falls in 1855.
